Alcohol Awareness

The legal drug you'll actually meet

Not a forbidden thing

Legal, advertised, and only a couple of years from being fully yours.

So this is the practical stuff: how to be around it without it wrecking a night, a reputation, your body, or a friend.

Fact one

Most people your age are not drinking heavily.

The stories and the socials make it look universal. It isn't.

What it does, in order

Depressant. Slows reactions, blurs judgement, lowers inhibition.

Judgement goes first, before you feel truly drunk. That's why "I was totally fine" comes right before the regret.

Why it hits you harder

Smaller body, more alcohol per drink in your blood. A brain still developing where alcohol does its damage.

And no learned limit yet. Chemistry and inexperience, not weakness.

The multiplication effect

Officers on a Friday night don't talk about livers. Alcohol multiplies what's already happening.

The argument, the walk home, the photo, the stranger. The setting and the plan are half the risk.

The non-negotiable part

A very drunk person cannot consent.

Sexual activity with someone incapacitated by alcohol is rape in law. Being drunk yourself is not a defence. Looking after a vulnerable friend is on all of you.

Looking after your people

Arrive together, stay together, leave together. Phone charged. Way home known before you go out.

Nobody wanders off drunk alone. Nobody is "just asleep, leave them".

If someone collapses

Recovery position. 999. Stay. Tell paramedics the truth.

Alcohol keeps absorbing after the last drink. "Sleep it off" is how young people die. Nobody gets in trouble for saving a mate.

Your call

"I'm not drinking tonight" is a complete sentence. No justification required.

Anyone still pushing after that has told you exactly how much they respect you.

Where to get help

Childline 0800 1111, up to 19, including a parent's drinking. Nacoa 0800 358 3456 for exactly that.

999 in an emergency, every time.
