Quick question

From what age is it legal to drink alcohol at home in the UK, with your parents' permission?

18? 16? 12? Lock in your answer.

Five.

The answer is five years old.

Legal is not the same as safe. The UK's top doctors advise an alcohol-free childhood, and no alcohol at all under 15. Today is about the gap between those two things.

What alcohol actually is

A depressant. It slows your brain, one notch per drink.

The relaxed, giggly feeling is your judgement and reactions being switched off. That's not a side effect. That is the effect.

Why it hits you harder

Smaller body, so more alcohol per drink in your blood. A brain still under construction, in exactly the areas alcohol disrupts.

And no calibration. Adults learned their limits slowly. Teenagers find out all at once.

The law, fast

Under 18: can't buy it, shops can't sell it to you, adults can't buy it for you. Fake ID is fraud. Police can confiscate it in the park and take you home.

The one exception: 16 and 17 year olds, beer or wine, with a table meal, with an adult.

The multiplication effect

Ask a police officer what alcohol does. They won't mention livers.

Alcohol multiplies whatever is happening: the argument, the dodgy walk home, the photo, the stranger being very friendly. The place and the people are half the risk.

Fact check

Most people your age are not drinking.

Whatever Saturday looks like online. The surveys say it every single year.

Looking after your people

Arrive together, stay together, leave together. Phone charged. Way home known.

Nobody wanders off drunk alone. Ever.

If someone goes down

Recovery position. 999. Stay. Tell paramedics the truth.

Alcohol keeps absorbing after the last drink. "Sleeping it off" is how young people die. Nobody gets in trouble for saving their mate.

Pressure

"I'm not drinking tonight" is a complete sentence.

Anyone who keeps pushing has just told you how much they respect you.

Where to get help

Childline 0800 1111, about anything, including drinking at home that worries you. Nacoa 0800 358 3456 for exactly that.

999 in an emergency, every time.
